L'église Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste a été construite entre 1861 et 1866. Le bâtiment a remplacé une première église qui avait été érigée en 1828 et qui était devenue avec les années trop exiguë. La façade de la première église était située rue Jacques-Cartier. La seconde église verra sa façade réorientée rue Longueuil.

L'architecture est l'oeuvre de Victor Bourgeau. Les travaux de charpente et de menuiserie ont été réalisés par Félix Côté tandis que ceux de maçonnerie par John Mc Neil, de Napierville. À l'intérieur, une toile réalisée par l'artiste Napoléon Bourassa faisant voir saint Jean l'Évangéliste est située en haut dans le couronnement du retable du maître-autel. En 1923, l'église fait l'objet de travaux importants exécutés par les entrepreneurs Bernier et Despatie. Il y a alors reconstruction de la façade et du clocher.

En 1934, l'église Saint-Jean-l'Évangéliste devient Cathédrale suite à la création du diocèse de Saint-Jean-de-Québec.

The Church of St. John the Evangelist was built between 1861 and 1866. The building replaced an earlier church that was built in 1828 and which had become too small with the years. The front of the first church was located rue Jacques-Cartier. The second church will have its facade reoriented on Longueuil street.

The architecture is the work of Victor Bourgeau. The work of joinery and carpentry were made by Félix Côté while those of masonry were made by John McNeil, of Napierville. Inside, a painting by the artist Napoleon Bourassa showing St. John the Evangelist is located upstairs in the crowning of the altar of the altarpiece. In 1923, the church is the subject of important work performed by Bernier and Despatie entrepreneurs. They reconstructed the facade and the bell tower.

In 1934, St. John the Evangelist church became Cathedral following the creation of the Diocese of Saint-Jean-de-Québec.
