One could easily spend more than one week here. I encountered travelers from France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Asia here.
Many were attempting to see as much of the west coast as possible.
Centennial coming up in 2016. John Muir, a naturalist, first visited in 1873 and did much to promote the park's protected status. Kings Canyon celebrated 75 yrs. Joint management since 1943.
I neglected to ask how much camping is currently in their countries.
This is the second oldest National Parks and it became a World Heritage Site in 1976. It goes from 1,700 ft. elevation to 13,000 ft/ 4,300 meters at Mt Whitney. Most of us were happy to be and visit up to 7,000 feet. The park encompasses 6 of the 7 life zones.
Access to Mt. Whitney is from the Eastern side near Lone Pine.
That is primarily of interest to hikers who have the time and experience to a) peak climb (there are 6 or more above 13,000 feet);
b) hike some or all of the Pacific Crest Trail; c) follow the John Muir Trail. Roads are not always open in winter. Campgrounds are usually May - Sept. There are 2 winter lodges - one on the Sequoia National Forest.
