The Haileybury Fire Department had seen many fires throughout the years. There were three different fires in Haileybury's downtown before the Great Fire of 1922. The Great Fire was the department's biggest challenge and too large for them to combat.
Following the Great Fire of 1922, construction of the Haileybury Fire Hall also brought with it the first mechanized fire pumper in Northern Ontario. The bell, now on display next to a Commemorative Plaque honouring firefighters and those who endured the Great Fire, serves as a reminder of the constant threat of fires which threatened many northern communities.
