Heckscher Playground is Central Park's oldest and largest playground, and was recently reopened after undergoing a renovation on May 12, 2006. While the greater scope of the play area is over three acres, the playground itself measures 1.58 acres - still quite sizeable.

The playground stands at the base of Umpire Rock, a favorite spot for kids and adults alike to clamber over. Aside from the rock, the playground's equipment offers plenty of opportunities for kids to climb and grapple.

But it's not just climbing here that attracts kids. For those hot days, there are plenty of water features for children to splash around in. The playground actually has two areas, one for older kids and one for younger kids, each with their own sets of playing areas, water features, and the like. The playground also has multiple swingsets, an artificial turf field, slides, and plenty else to occupy the youngsters. Nearby Heckscher Ballfields also allow for a larger open space for kids to run around.
