James Harrison had much influence on the development of Geelong. He launched the Geelong Advertiser or "Addy" as a weekly in 1840, when Geelong's population was just 400 people. It consisted of classified advertisements then - front page news coverage only started in 1924. It is Victoria's oldest newspaper.
Not only was the Scotsman an accomplished journalist, he was an inventor too. He was one of the pioneers of commercial refrigeration, and built the world's first ice-making plant in Geelong in 1859.
This sculpted bollard is one of the iconic colourful bollards along the Geelong waterfront. These wooden characters depict the fascinating history and development of Geelong. They were created between 1994 and 1999 for the Geelong City Council by Jan Mitchell (1940-2008), who was assisted by carver Pieter Roos and artist John Starr.
