Engineering in Geelong began with the nearby Western Foundry in 1869 (which manufactured velocipedes such as this one), and developed further with many companies then establishing plants here - including Ford in 1925.
Wearing trousers was quite controversial in the late 1800s - Natty Knickers refers to the breeches that lady cyclists wore when they rode these velocipedes.
This sculpted bollard is one of the iconic colourful bollards along the Geelong waterfront. These wooden characters depict the fascinating history and development of Geelong. They were created between 1994 and 1999 for the Geelong City Council by Jan Mitchell (1940-2008), who was assisted by carver Pieter Roos and artist John Starr.
