Carrie Moore was born in 1882. She was one of 9 children, and grew up in poverty in Geelong West.
Her voice was her key to success - at age 15 she was performing in Sydney and Melbourne, and as a musical comedy star played many leading roles. By her early twenties she was rich and famous, and moved to London in 1903. Her biggest role was the lead in "The Merry Widow" in 1908. She had very little of her wealth left when she died in Sydney in 1956.
This sculpted bollard is one of the iconic colourful bollards along the Geelong waterfront. These wooden characters depict the fascinating history and development of Geelong. They were created between 1994 and 1999 for the Geelong City Council by Jan Mitchell (1940-2008), who was assisted by carver Pieter Roos and artist John Starr.
