Early Geelong Footballer Bollard - Geelong Waterfront, Victoria, AU - Outside Wooden Display Carvings on Waymarking.com

The local football club was formed in 1860. About 100 years ago the area across the road was used as a practice ground. When the footballers were moved to the excellent Kardinia Park just up the road, this old field became a Boer War Monument and is now known as Transvaal Square.

This sculpted bollard is one of the iconic colourful bollards along the Geelong waterfront. These wooden characters depict the fascinating history and development of Geelong. They were created between 1994 and 1999 for the Geelong City Council by Jan Mitchell (1940-2008), who was assisted by carver Pieter Roos and artist John Starr.
