GEELONG POWERHOUSE
The Geelong B power station near Corio Bay operated from 1954 until 1970, when it was abandoned due to high running costs. The building then stood empty for many decades. In 2014 the site was leased by Ian Ballis, who with a team of volunteers removed 30 tons of rubbish and set about turning the abandoned power station into a street art gallery. The 6-storey 3000sqm building is now Australia’s largest industrial street art space.

The project has been well received. Artists have creative freedom, and in the first six months alone over 350 local and international artists have contributed their work. The local community also gets to see the positive aspects of this sometimes misplaced "art" - over 30,000 people have visited the site in just the first few months.

The smaller artwork changes and evolves on a daily basis, but the large murals remain as showpieces.

RONE MURAL
This large mural on the southern end of the power station was created by internationally-renowned street artist Rone. It took him 5 days and required the use of a cherry-picker to reach the higher areas. Incorporating the pockmarked broken windows into the design was a particular challenge, but ultimately the negative spaces became an integral part of the artwork.

Rone based the mural on an actual photo he took, and successfully encapsulated the essence of innocence and mystery into the image. He titled the portrait "Jane Doe".
