THE STEIGLITZ GOLD MINING BOOM
Steiglitz, situated in the Brisbane Ranges between Geelong and Ballarat, flourished when gold was discovered here in the 1850s. By the 1860s there were over 1500 residents in the town which by then boasted four hotels, several churches, a newspaper, a variety of shops, a courthouse and a post office. The gold rush declined in the 1870s, then enjoyed a short revival in the 1890s. The last gold mine in the town closed in 1941 - Steiglitz is now a deserted ghost town with only the historic courthouse and a few other relics remaining.
The Steiglitz Historic Park, covering an area of 469ha, was proclaimed in 1979.
THE STEIGLITZ COURTHOUSE
The red brick courthouse was completed in June 1875 for a contract price of £1600. As fortunes declined the court house was closed in January 1879. During a subsequent gold-mining revival it was reopened from 1895 to 1899. After then standing unused for decades, Parks Victoria took ownership of the building in 1977 and now use it as a museum.
The building is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
