The Family is a group sculpture of three distinct figures of four people. A child rides on the fathers shoulders completing the four members of the family. The sculptures were created while the artist was in residence in Greece in 1967. Upon his return to Phoenix, The Family was installed in front of the Maricopa County Superior Court House in Phoenix, Arizona on November 20, 1967.As two county supervisors feared the nude figures would corrupt the morals of youths visiting the courthouse, the artist added the appearance of skin tight bathing suits. John Henry Waddell was born in Iowa, relocated to Arizona where he was a professor at Arizona State University. The Family was cast while Waddell was in residence in Greece.
