Geelong's first electricity supply company started operating in 1898. The Melbourne Electric Supply Company (later acquired by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria) provided Geelong's power until Geelong was connected to the state electrical grid in 1936.
From 1901 electricity was only provided by the Geelong A power station in the CBD. In 1954 this newer Geelong B power station was opened in North Geelong near Corio Bay.
There were 3 boilers each connected to a generator of 10,000 kW capacity. The power station was cooled with water drawn from Corio Bay. The fuel used was coal purchased from Winchelsea and Anglesea.
The Geelong B powerhouse was not as efficient as newer stations in Victoria, and was eventually used only for peak loads due to its high operating costs. It finally closed in 1970 and has been abandoned since then.
