The gardens, set in 17 acres, are the fourth oldest Botanic Gardens in Australia. The first curator was Daniel Bunce, followed by John Raddenberry in 1872.
The gardens are well known for the OPCAA registered Pelargonium and Salvia collections. The fernery established in 1885 is one of the highlights. There are several trees listed on the National Trust register of significant trees, including a Chinese Ginkgo biloba tree and a Chilean Wine Palm Jubaea chilensis.
The gardens ere renovated in 2002, and a new entrance garden with arid-area plants was created to highlight the importance of water conservation.
The area, with fountains and many garden paths, is popular for picnics. Classical musical concerts are held in the gardens during summer.
