Crossing Hale Passage the Whatcom Chief has been doing this run since 1965. It serves the 650 or so people of Lummi Island.

The Whatcom Chief has been plying the waters of Hale Passage in the Salish Sea since 1965. It is a short crossing only taking about eight minutes, however it is only round trip each hour unless the master feels there is a need more crossings.

According to the Whatcom County website, which owns and operates the vessel,

This ferry serves Lummi Island residents, visitors, and businesses, transporting over 171,343 passengers for 2013. This same period has seen vehicle or passenger car trips of 103,695 and total vehicles transported of 106,620.
