Located just inside the front entrance/exit gates to Chico Cemetery is a World War II memorial. Part osf the memorial is a submarine torpedo from the U.S. Navy. This torpedo contained two serial numbers, the first was the from the warhead (serial No. 202 made in 1941) and the second from the flask (serial No. 9430 made in 1944). The warhead mentions a full weight of 685 lbs., the flask a weight of 1052 lbs.
The memorial contains an inscription etched in marble in front of the torpedo that reads:
TO THE UNITED STATES
52 SUBMARINES AND
THEIR GALLANT CREWS
WHO SACRIFICED THEIR
LIVES IN WORLD WAR II
"LEST WE FORGET THESE
BOATS ON ETERNAL PATROL"
The memorial lists the 52 submarines that were lost in World War II along with their crews. This memorial makes a nice statement here within the cemetery.
