This stretch of road is beside the location where the Rothwell Inn once stood. It was opened in 1853 in what was then the township of Rothwell. Farmers left the area over the years, and when the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1958 it was not reconstructed. All that remained was a chimney and the ruins of a wall.
The iconic 1979 movie Mad Max, where policeman Max Rockatansky chases down violent motorcycle gangs in Australian wastelands, was filmed in this relatively desolate area with the You Yangs ranges in the background. The location suited the bleak apocalyptic nature of the movie.
Twenty-five minutes into the movie a scene is shot at this location. Max and fellow officer Goose are questioning a trike rider and his girlfriend near the ruins of the Rothwell Inn. A call comes in over the police radio, and Max and Goose then leave the trike rider to go chase the rampaging gangs.
