The innovative design was approved in 2012, and construction started in 2013 with planned completion at the end of 2015.
The new 6000 square metre building is a centre where Geelong’s extensive heritage collection will be preserved, and the library will hold 120,000 print and multimedia items when completed.
It is an environmentally sustainable building design. The dome design is conceived as "an erosion of spherical forms". The new building is located on the site of the previous Geelong Library and Heritage Centre which was demolished in 2013. The total project cost of $45m is funded by the City of Greater Geelong ($20m), Victoria State Government ($15m) and Federal Government ($10m).
Former Geelong Mayor John Mitchell had this to say:
"Geelong's new library is tomorrow's architecture here today. It's an iconic building... A piece of art that will make people think and bring people to the city."
