The Eureka Rebellion took place here on the 3rd December 1854, when the local Ballarat gold miners revolted against the colonial authority and mining fees imposed by the British government.
Approximately 30 people, mostly miners, died during the conflict which is also known as the Battle of the Eureka Stockade.

This monument, commissioned by the City of Ballarat to capture the spirit of sacrifice and unity, was unveiled by Premier Steve Bracks on the 26th November 2004. The interpretive sculpture encompasses the experience facing every miner on the goldfields at the time - a momentous decision to either join in or stay out. Stepping into the circle or barricade symbolizes crossing the line in solidarity with the insurgency.

The sculpture is composed of 20 steel panels welded in a circle 11 metres in diameter. Each of the 2,4-metre-high panels depicts part of the Eureka story. The panels were computer-cut with an electric beam in Bendigo, and then sandblasted, rusted with acid and finally waxed to resist graffiti.

"We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties" - The Eureka Oath of Allegiance.
