Fritz Pümpin (1901-1972) was a Swiss painter who is especially known for his impressionist landscape paintings. The Fritz Pümpin Foundation created a walk through his home town with twelve stations showing the differences between the time when they were created and today.

"Alt Gelterkinden" was painted 1944. The scene is at a weather station near a walkway from the railway station to the town center. Some small unobtrusive details remind the danger of war situation at the time of the painting. A soldier in uniform on furlough; the missing sign at the pole for direction arrows to not give potential invaders any geographical hints. But the focus is on the peaceful playing children.

The location has not changed very much since then. The house in the background had to make way a broader street. The layout plan of the way has changed, but not much, the trees are only right of the weather station today.

The architect who created this small weather station, was also the architect of the painter's own home, that is now a listed heritage building.
