The church of St Mary of the Angels was built of Lethbridge basalt and Barrabool limestone in stages between 1854 and 1931. The existing church was commenced in 1854 on the site of an earlier church of 1846-7, and opened on February 4th 1872. Building works to the nave and towers were started in 1872 with the original Decorated Gothic design finally being completed between 1931 and 1937
St Mary of the Angels is one of the first country churches in Victoria, and was designated a Basilica in 2004
