Located in the south central part of Chico Cemetery is a very nice Civil War monument comprised of a Civil War Union soldier standing on top of a marble and stone base. Surrounding this monument in the background are many graves of Civil War veterans in addition to graves from other wars. There's an inscription in front of the monument that reads:
ERECTED BY
HALLECK POST
No 19.G. A. R. & W. R. C.
IN MEMORY OF
OUR COMRADES
1861 - 1865
1910.
The left side of the marble base reads:
IN HONOR OF
THE BRAVE MEN
WHO
FROM THE FIRST
BORE A LOYAL PART
IN THE GREAT
CIVIL WAR
The right side of the marble base reads:
THESE HEROES ARE
DEAD
THEY DIED FOR
LIBERTY
THEY DIED FOR US
THEY ARE AT REST
THEY SLEEP IN THE
LAND THEY MADE FREE
The many rows of veterans graves make a very tranquil and sober scene reminiscent of Veteran National Cemeteries one finds elsewhere. This is a beautifully-maintained cemetery with some beautiful headstones and worth the visit here.
