COL. BENJAMIN HOLMES HOUSE residence of the Salem County militia commander in 1778.  The northern section, with a lower roof, was erected in 1750.  British troops burned the interior in 1778 and destroyed the Holmes ferryhouse, which stood nearby.- New Jersey: A Guide To Its Present and Past, 1939, Tour 29A, pg. 642

The house actually was originally constructed circa 1729.  The present house was built in 1784 using the building's original massing and using those was which were still standing following the British raid.  The Georgian style house appears to be in excellent condition and continues to serve as a private residence.

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
