There is a floral pattern at the apex of the monument, and just above the Woodmen emblem is a design that includes sun symbols (crosses in circles). There was a portrait of Mr. Ford here at one time, right below the Woodmen emblem, but time, elements, or vandals have removed it. The inscription is:

J.G. Ford
Born Oct. 27, 1896
Died Oct. 17, 1918

U.S. Service
Motor Truck No. 338
Camp Beauregard LA.

Rest soldier rest thy warfare's
o'er;
Sleep the sleep that knows
no breaking,
Dream of battle fields no
more,
Days of danger, nights of
waking.

--

The name could be "J.C. Ford," and that's how Findagrave lists him, but compare the C- and -g- in "Camp Beauregard." There is nothing to suggest if he died in battle or was one of the many casualties of disease during the Great War.
Was the inscription legible?: Yes
