The obelisk shaped memorial cenotaph was placed in honor of Lieut. Alexander Lewden Robeson who was killed during the Battle of Fredericksburg during the Civil War. His remains were never found in this Memorial was placed to honor him. The local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Was also named in honor of him.
