The reedy shallow urban lake was previously known as Yuille's Swamp. It became the site of Ballarat's first permanent supply of piped water in 1856, during the gold rush years.

One hundred years later Lake Wendouree was the site of the rowing, canoeing and kayaking events during the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956.

It is now used as a recreational lake.
