The Donkey Sanctuary of Aruba is open year round and allows and even encourages you to come in and feed and pet the donkeys. They take in and care for the wild donkeys that permeate the island. They rely on the tourists to help feed the donkeys.

The Donkey Sanctuary is on the North center of the island (Aruba).

The gate will be closed, this is okay, the gate needs to be closed to keep the donkeys from leaving, just go ahead and open it and go in, BUT remember to close the gate behind you.

Volunteers man the sanctuary, and as you come in they welcome you and invite you to buy some food for the donkeys and feed them (not required, but encouraged of course).

They give you a little history about how the sanctuary came to be along with the history of some of the donkeys as well. They know them all by name and will be glad to give you little hints and tips about them as well.

They ask that you transfer the feed from the plastic bags into bowls they provide so the donkeys do not grab the bags and try to eat them to as this can be hazardous to the donkeys.

Make sure that you either put the feed in your open hand or place it on the ground (inside the building) and let them get it from there.

Be careful when feeding them, they like to start chewing on your clothes as well. There is a sign that a sense of humor is required, and I am sure this is what they mean. The donkeys are hungry (some more than others) and they are just trying to get your attention.

None of them bit us, but they were sure lining up to get fed that is for sure.

My daughter and I fed them, and they do have a website if you would like to donate some more later.

They also have a running total of donkeys they feed and how much it takes to feed them. So if you can donate as well, may you be blessed for doing so.

We truly enjoyed our visit here and hope you will too!
