Col. Hazard was the owner of the Hazard Powder Company, which was 1 of 3 providers of gunpowder to the Union Army during the Civil War.

It is a two story brick building with tall double windows. The entrance is centered on the building sporting twin doors. Over the doorway at the height of the second story is an inscription Hazardville Institute 1869.
