As you enter the star shaped memorial plaza, to your left is a Korean War, plaque & plinth, with a list of names of fallen veterans. To your right is Global War on Terror, plaque & plinth, also with a list of names of fallen veterans from the area. The other points on the star, represent the three armed services.
A lifesize Iwo Jima bas relief is set off to the side, on the rear there are photos & names of fallen veterans from the area who died in service, during the World Wars.
A very moving monument to the past.
"The City of Lake Alfred embarked on a project to build a memorial that will be the centerpiece of the city, dedicated to promoting the recognition of and honoring our veterans.
The memorial is located at Gardner Park in the City of Lake Alfred
along the US 17/92 highway.
The monument was originally on display on Route I4 for a number of years. Because of a road widening project it was going to be taken down and destroyed. However a group of vets formed Iwo Jima Monument, Inc. and it was taken down and put in storage in Auburndale for nearly 10 years. When the Parks and Recreation Director, a member of the Iwo Jima Monument board, heard of our plans for the memorial he offered the monument to us and with some restoration we now have this amazing tribute to the men and women who served and currently serve our country."
