A nearby information board about the area has the following information.
The sluice gate building was the victim of regular graffiti which is unsightly and costly to remove.
We wanted to improve its appearance to reflect the significant improvements made to the river, and the importance of the sluice gate in protecting the local area from flooding.
We ran a painting project with Parrs Wood Secondary School.
The pupils designed murals and then painted the best designs onto the walls of the flood gates, with the help of Unity Arts, using eco friendly paints.
Thank you to everyone who helped create a better place at Didsbury.
The mural shows an idealised rural scene with a river flowing through countryside. The side of the building facing the River Mersey shows an angler, using a rod and line in a river sitting next to a stone arch bridge. There is a cow on the opposite bank of the river watching the angler and in the distance a flock of sheep are grazing on a hill side.
The eastern end of the building has a man and a woman looking at a river as it passes through countryside and in the distance there is either a sunrise or sunset over some hills.
The opposite end of the building has a similar scene, but this time a single man is looking into the distance.
The fourth wall shows the river in the foreground with an old tyre swing suspended from a tree by a rope. There is another sunset / sunrise in this picture, but in this case it is the most spectacular and forms the dominant part of the scene.
