Text of historical marker on east side of bookstore entrance:

MINIKEN STORE

This two story native sandstone building in the
vernacular commercial was given an Italianate flavor
by its arched windows. It was built in 1886 by H.L.
Miniken as an extension of his brother George
Miniken's general mercantile next door at 134 E. Main.
At the turn of the 20th Century it also housed the
Offices and exchange of the Batesville and Oil Trough
Telephone Company. Later, the city's first Coca-Cola
bottling and distribution facility was located here.
During the Great Depression, it was the site of "The
Big Twenty", a restaurant where any and all meals
were just $.20. In the 1940's and 50's, it was home
to the Vest grocery store and in the late 1980's
was the location of the Feedbag restaurant. Clinton
and Mayfan Thomas purchased the building in 1998,
where they now operate the Paper Chase bookstore.

Date of Construction: 1886

2-story sandstone; continuation of lower facade of B22 (George Miniken Store) with narrower arches broken by insertion of a heavy lintel at imposts; staircase entrance on west end.
