Heaton Cooper was born in Manchester and studied art under George Clausen. His painting took him to Yorkshire, Morocco and Norway. Whilst in Norway he married Mathilde. Unable to earn a living in Norway he returned to Bolton, and later the Lake District. In the Lake District he established himself as one of the dominant Lakes artists. He established an art studio and shop, which still exhibits and sells prints of his works.

The today picture is obscured by tree growth. To the naked eye the Langdale Pikes were visible across Elterwater, however the photograph cannot be enhanced to show the Pikes due to the intervening tree branches.
