"In 1821, Texas was a vast unsettled province in northern Mexico. The Mexican government encouraged colonization with the Constitution of 1824 and its promise of free land, no taxes and unlimited opportunities. Nacogdoches is not only known as “the Oldest Town in Texas,” but also as the “Gateway.” As the early pioneers forged westward, this town was their last contact with civilization. It was literally the gateway to Texas and to the vast unsettled Southwest beyond.
This monument pays tribute not only to the city of Nacogdoches, but to the courageous and adventurous spirits of the first families that helped to establish and settle the great state of Texas."
