Jane Eyre is orphaned and lives with her uncle’s family, the Reeds. The Reed family are not kind to Jane and she has a miserable existence. Eventually she is allowed attend Lowood School for Girls. Lowood is a grim institution run by Mr Brocklehurst. After an epidemic of typhoid, Mr Brocklehurst’s neglect of the school is exposed. Several benefactors erect new school buildings.

Jane eventually passes through the scholl and teaches there for a time. She takes a position as governess at Thornfield Hall. She teaches Adele Varens. One night, whilst out walking on the moors, she comes across Edward Rochester. Mr Rochester’s horse slips on the ice and Jane assists him. Mr Rochester is the master of Thornfield Hall. Adele Varens is his ward.

Jayne’s aunt, Mrs Reed, is dying and summons Jane to her bedside. She gives Jane a letter from her uncle, Mr John Eyre, asking Jane to live with him. When she returns to Thornfield she writes to Mr Eyre.
Mr Rochester proposes to Jane and she accepts. At the ceremony there are objections to the marriage by Mr Mason, on the basis that Mr Rochester is still married to the sister of Mr Mason. Mr Rochester explains that he was tricked into the marriage and that his wife has descended into madness and is living in rooms at Thornfield. Jayne leaves Thornfield that night.

Jane becomes destitute and is taken in by the Rivers family. St John Rivers finds Jane a teaching post at a charity school. He later discovers Jane’s identity and tells her that Mr John Eyre has died and left Jane £20,000. Apparently the Rivers are cousins of Jane. Jane shares her inheritance with the Rivers family.

Jane hears Mr Rochesters voice and makes at trip back to Thornfield. There she finds a burnt out wreck. Mr Rochester’s wife commited suicide and burnt the house down. Mr Rochester was injured in the blaze and is now blind. Mr Rochester proposes to Jane and she accepts. His eyesight improves by the time their first son is born.
