The film is intended as an allegory on the capitalist way of life.
The film starts with the brutal punishment of a plantation worker in the imperial past, and rapidly switches to the present day.
The hero of the piece is one Michael Arnold Travis. Travis starts off as a coffee salesman in the North East of England. He strays onto a government installation and is tortured, escapes and becomes a medical research subject. He meets up with the daughter of Sir James Burgess, an evil industrialist, and becomes his right hand man. Sir James is involved in a shady deal in Africa and wants an unwitting Travis to take the wrap. Travis gets five years in prison. Whilst in prison Travis converts to humanism and on his release decides to help down and outs. The down and outs attack him for his troubles.
