The station is unmanned & caters for locals & those travelling on The Sunlander, a train running between Brisbane & Cairns which is a favourite of tourists. The station is also on the North Coast Line which carries freight other than coal.
Sarina was connected to Mackay by rail in 1913 & to the capital, Brisbane by 1925. The station is 925 kilometres north of Brisbane.
Opposite the station is the CSR Sugar Refinery & distillery Plane Creek which has its own cane lines, wagons & diesels.
