The fox is out of the bag at Happy Hollow Park and Zoo. Four of them, actually.
A quartet of adorable Fennec foxes were born at the San Jose zoo Jan. 23. Happy Hollow zookeepers and officials had stayed mum about their arrival until this week when they posted pictures of the kits on the park's Facebook page. It'll be a few more weeks before the large-eared newbies -- two boys and two girls -- are strong enough to join their parents, Safar and Clyde, in the exhibit. In the meantime, they're being hand-raised around the clock by Happy Hollow zookeepers to help ensure their survival. Sadly, Safar's previous offspring didn't make it this far, which is why zoo officials are providing even more care this time around.
Zoo Director Valerie Riegel said she's proud of the work the "Zoo Crew" has been doing with the foxes, which are part of the Species Survival Plan. "Even though not officially on display, we couldn't wait any longer to share the good news," she said.
RUNNING FOR A CAUSE: The Sustainable Living Foundation is holding its 16th annual Run for Zimbabwe Orphans on Sunday at St. Joseph School in Mountain View. Last year's event raised $35,000 for the Makumbi orphanage in Zimbabwe, and even if you're not taking part in one of the three runs (220 yards, half-mile and mile), there will be a lot going on during the event's fair, which runs from noon to 4 p.m. Activities include entertainment from two Zim bands, games, a children's art exhibition and a food buffet featuring sadza, a traditional Zimbabwe dish.
For more information, go to the Sustainable Living Foundation's website, www.zimbabweparaguay.net.
SONATAS ON SUNDAY: The San Jose Music Chamber Society has its last concert of the season Sunday at the Le Petit Trianon theater downtown, and it features a stellar pairing of pianist Awadagin Pratt and cellist Zuill Bailey, who will perform the Brahms and Franck sonatas for cello and piano on the program, plus some solo pieces spotlighting each. Tickets for the 6 p.m. show are available at www.sjchambermusic.org.
UPDATE ON SCARLET NIGHT: It turns out that I had only half the story when I reported some of the fundraising totals from last Saturday night's Scarlet Night fundraiser for El Camino Hospital's South Asian Heart Center. Jodi Barnard, president of the El Camino Hospital Foundation, says the event raised more than $250,000. Combined with leadership gifts already in place, that makes more than $500,000 available to fund this year's planned expansion to San Jose and Fremont.
