This short film was the first TV production for the playwright Alan Bennett.

The film concerns a group of cyclists from a northern mill town in pre World War 1 days. The film follows the group as they cycle from home to Bolton Abbey. The cyclists straddle a large cross section of life, from reserved middle class businessmen and managers to more boisterous working class men.

The film starts at the Boer War memorial in their town and rambles through countryside to Bolton Abbey with much dialogue in between. The film ends in 1919 back at the War Memorial where the elder members of the group are paying their respect to the younger men who have all been killed during the war.
