As described by the National Geodetic Survey in 1973 (and a subsequent update in 1986):
"0.3 MI NW FROM CYPRESS. ABOUT 0.3 MILE NORTHWEST ALONG US HIGHWAY 290 FROM THE POST OFFICE AT CYPRESS, 95 YARDS (P) EAST-NORTHEAST OF THE EAST CORNER OF AN EXXON SERVICE STATION, 113 FEET NORTH OF THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE JUERGENS STORE, 41 FEET EAST OF THE EAST END OF A LARGE MOBILE HOME, 7 FEET SOUTH OF THE SOUTH SIDE OF AN OLD SHED, 12 1/2 FEET EAST OF THE SOUTHEAST CONCRETE FOOTING OF A WATER TANK (NOW GONE), 2 INCHES EAST OF A 10-INCH FORKED ELM TREE, A VERY SMALL CHISELED CROSS ON THE SOUTH EDGE OF A 4-INCH WELL CASING WICH PROJECTS 2 FEET ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE GROUND.
(1986) RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY [...] A NEW TO REACH FOLLOWS. 0.2 KM (0.1 MI) NORTHWESTERLY ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 290 FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH SPRING-CYPRESS ROAD IN CYPRESS. ADD--84.6 M (277.6 FT) NORTHWEST OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE HIGHWAY."
The 1973 "reach to" description is pretty obsolete by now, and its 1986 addendum -- while still accuratae -- could probably be revised or simplified to: "Within the grounds of Cypress Top Historic Park at 26026 Hempstead Hwy, 0.2 km (0.1 mi) NW of the Hempstead Highway and Spring-Cypress Road intersection."
That said, the actual 1973 "close-up" description is still quite accurate. The "small chiseled cross" in question can still be found on on the South edge of a 4" well casing which projects 2' above the ground. Please note that the well casing has been partially covered by the trunk of that old 1973 "forked elm tree", whose diameter has far exceeded its 10" size as reported 40 years ago. Likewise, the benchmark's associated NGS Data Sheet's posted coordinates are reasonably close to my own personal observations: it states "N 29 58 13.3 W 095 41 52.6", which was in line with my findings as measured within 15' accuracy and 10+ reading averages: "N 29° 58.221 W 095° 41.877".
The station was recovered in poor condition: the well casing has been re-painted several times since 1973, so the edging of the small cross is barely noticeable. See posted waymark's gallery images for BM close-up and setting details; some additional pictures are available on the
NGS website itself as well.
