Saint George was a Roman soldier, killed in 303 for refusing to offer a sacrifice to Roman gods.
There's a legend about St. George killing the dragon, which formed the most popular form of depicting the saint: killing a dragon with his spear.
St. George is very popular saint, especially in Franconia. He is also one of Fourteen Holy Helpers, the saints worshiped especially in the time of plagues.
