The James Service was a 441 ton iron barque, and carried three masts on two decks. She measured 47 metres by 9 metres and was on a journey from Calcutta to Melbourne when it ran aground 9km northwest of Mandurah, having been blown off-course in stormy weather. The vessel was lost with all hands on 23 July 1878, most of which are buried in the graveyard of Christ’s Church,Mandurah in close proximity to the anchor
