Phil Hardberger Park was named in honor of a former Mayor of San Antonio, Texas who is still actively working for the betterment of the San Antonio metropolitan area. Mr. Hardberger has helped develop the Linear Creekway Parks Development Program that is building a city-wide system of interconnected parks throughout the entire city. Work on developing various parks and on building the hiking and biking paths along several major creek systems that would eventually create an interconnected system of trails has continued to get city funding and is well on its way toward completion. The various creek pathways not only beautify the city, but offer public art, better drainage, additional recreational and fitness areas for the San Antonio residents.
The Phi Hardberger park is one of the major park nodes within the Salado Creek park system. The main part of this park is advancing the use of solar energy to power all of its electrical needs. It captures rainwater in large storage tanks to be used for watering the vegetation within the park and for conservation purposes. Other attributes within the park proper include an eco-friendly parking area, packed gravel pathways, a large dog park, and a children's play area as well as the miles of hike and bike paths contained within the park boundary.
Extending from the Hardberger Park property, that covers acerage from Blanco Road to NW Military Hwy., are connective trails for hiking and biking that extend northward from Blanco Rd to Huebner Rd. that is two miles away. The southern reach follows Salado Creek for 2.4 miles, going under Wurzbach Parkway and finally connecting with the Walker Ranch Heritage Park at West Avenue.
When entering the Blanco Rd. main entrance, the trailhead at the right end (northward ) of the parking lot. This You Are Here sign is at the edge of the parking lot where you enter the trail going forward or by turning right, you approach the central facility building where the solar power is generated, where the rainwater is conserved and stored and where the restrooms are located. It is from this main facility building that the Salado Creek extension trail can be gotten on, or you can enter the local park trail pathways within the park property.
