"Building 710 was constructed in 1969 and is important for its association with Cold War Era military history. Designed to withstand a nuclear attack, the two-story underground building, of reinforced concrete, served as the Defense Civil Preparedness Agency’s Region 6 Operations Center. Since 1979, it has been utilized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as its Region 8 Operations Center." (from (

This building was built underground to 'survive' a nuclear attack. I worked at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Site for years and many of those buildings were also built to withstand nuclear attacks and direct attacks by a crashing airplane.
This is a secure facility and you will need to present identification and have your car inspected (open hood, look under with a mirror) before entry is allowed. There are several other Waymarks on the site you may also want to visit. I was also asked by a security guard why I was photographing the building. When I explain it was a NRHP, he was fine with the photos. (
