Speed or Spin - Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania
This wayside is one of five in a series at the new Park Office/Visitor Center of Ohiopyle State Park. This series focuses on the river navigation of the Youghiogheny River, the focal point of the park.
Speed or Spin
Traditional wood and fabric kayaks couldn't stand up to the beating of these rapids. The development of fiberglass kayaks in the 1950's opened up this river to new forms of fun. Longer kayaks glide fast and straight for racing. Shorter, flat-bottomed kayaks have excellent maneuverability for surfing, spinning and cartwheeling.
