Plaque Text
Mr. Secretary
[Nostalgic Photo at Left ]
In January 1947, after failing to negotiate an end to the Chinese civil war, George Marshall was appointed Secretary of State by President Truman. The last allied leader to give up hope of working with the Soviets, Marshall concluded in spring 1947 that the U.S.S.R was stalling a German settlement and a permanent peace. "We are at the point of decision" Marshall helped build a bipartisan foreign policy, aid to Greece and Turkey, The Berlin Airlift, and the creation of NATO ensued.
