This area was settled due to the area's fertile soil and abundant game and fish. Also there was the salt form the Great Marshes. An extensive harbor protected by Sandy Neck, which insured continual growth for the shipping traffic between Plymouth and Boston centers.
Barnstable was formally incorporated as a town in 1639 by the first meeting house and purchase of additional lands to the west and east from Native Americans in 1644 and 1647.
