The area was first settled in 1643 and was one of the four independent Narragansett Bay settlements that formed the colony of Rhode Island. The old Tow's Clerk Office built in 1834 was torn down to make way for the new Town Hall. built in 1893. In 1854 the Kentish Artillery, charted in 1797, permission was granted to erect an armory on the Town House lot. Also built on the Town House lot was a firefighting apparatus manned by volunteer firemen. The last to be erected on the Town House lot was a free library.
