This is a great place to view our state's most disgruntled volcano. It is currenty quite active with several vent in the crater and lava dome that pour out steam. Right now it's safe to be at the observatory and even to hike the trails to get a bit closer. This picture is take from the overlook that is right next to the center. You will have to park in the main lot and then take a short walk up the hill to the main viewing area. To get to the observatory, take the Castle Rock exit off of I-5. Follow Spirit Lake Highway until it ends. There are three visitor centers along the way, but this one has the best view. It is $8 to visit both the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center and this center and to use it's trails.
