The 1909 Scalan Building was built on top of what used to be the first presidential residence of the new Republic after its independence from Mexico. Per an associated waymark pertinent to the NRHP-listed Scalan Building:

"Francis R. Lubbock purchased this lot from the Allen Brothers in 1837. A year later, Lubbock sold the property to the Republic of Texas for use as the official home of the Republic’s President. Only two of the Republic’s presidents, Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar, lived here before the capital was moved to Austin."
Marker Number: 10664

Marker Text:
Here dwelt President Sam Houston from November, 1837 to December, 1838, and President Mirabeau B. Lamar, from December, 1838 to October, 1839. Erected by the State of Texas 1936
