A quote by Calvin Coolidge accompanies and explains the mural:
"Marching Through Baltimore in 1861 on the Historic 19th of April true to the tradition of their own Lexington and Concord defending the Constitution and the Union carrying freedom to all who live beneath the stars and stripes."
The mural depicts severl soldiers in dress uniforms. One soldier in the center seems to have just been shot as the others turn in the direction of the attack. On soldier on the right is defending himself with his rifle from someone who has tried to wrestle the rifle from him. The flag of the United States and the flag of the US Army? are held upright by soldiers in the background.
This mural is on the left side of the War Memorial but does not seem to be considered a part of it..at least by the Smithsonian Inventory. See (
