The 90km Comrades ultramarathon race takes place every year in winter, and alternates in direction between an "up" and a "down" run.
The Wall is about halfway along the marathon route, near Drummond overlooking the Valley of a Thousand Hills. It is constructed of interlocking blocks that make up a long retaining wall.
In 2015 the cost of purchasing a brick with an engraved plaque was R400. They are only available to runners who have successfully completed the distance within the allowed cut-off time.
The blocks are also purchased by family and friends to commemorate milestones or deceased Comrades runners.
The plaques are usually yellow. The green plaques are for runners who have completed a minimum of 10 Comrades runs.
